From Thirst to Thriving: Kijani’s Clean Water Turnaround
Kijani Village sat at the edge of the dry plains, where the walk for water often meant missing school or market days. Mothers rose before dawn and returned hours later with heavy jerrycans, while children struggled to keep up with lessons.
When our NGO began the Kijani Water Project, we started with community meetings—listening first. Village leaders identified the most sustainable site, and a women-led water committee formed to oversee maintenance and fees.
The drilling began at sunrise one Tuesday. By noon on the third day, clear water surged from the new borehole. Cheers echoed across the valley. Within weeks, school attendance rose, local gardens returned, and clinic records showed fewer waterborne illnesses.
Today, the well is more than infrastructure: it’s dignity restored. The water committee manages a small fund for spare parts, and trained technicians respond within 48 hours of any issue. Kijani’s story is a reminder that the shortest path to opportunity often begins with a reliable tap.
